The Israeli-Gaza war is causing worldwide shock. Great human suffering, complex geopolitical contexts and deeply contradictory narratives render peace in the near future increasingly unlikely. Dr. Jan Busse analyzes the causes and mechanisms of the conflict and offers a structured overview of possible approaches to conflict resolution. His lecture also marks the start of the five-part lecture series “The Middle East Conflict in the Context of Changing Global Dynamics” as well as the fourth Leipzig Science Festival Globe24 “Precarious Freedom”.

Since the terrorist attack by Hamas and other armed groups on October 7, 2023, the Middle East conflict has returned to the center of international attention. Israel responded to the attack with a war in the Gaza Strip, which has now been going on for over a year and has been accompanied by a massive regional escalation. Jan Busse analyzes the historical origins of this conflict and classifies the competing narratives of the conflict parties. He also provides an overview of the central issues in dispute, current conflict dynamics and regional contexts, and finally offers insights into possible perspectives for conflict resolution.
