Spaces of Liberation: networks, practices and imaginaries of Lusophone African liberation movements' diplomatic revolution (1960s–1974)

In the 1960s, as anticolonialism reached its peak and dozens of newly independent states emerged, a cohort of activists from the Portuguese-ruled colonies strove to make space for their claims in a transnational political sphere increasingly shaped by post-colonial governments and pan-Africanist aspirations of unity. The trajectories and practices of anticolonial activists from Mozambique, Angola and Guinea Bissau are the entry point to this investigation of how spaces for liberation politics were realised, which forms they took and how they were used to advance diplomatic and propaganda strategies.

The thesis shows that anticolonial mobilities and connectivity were rooted in dynamic networked spaces in and from which certain activists managed to mediate between nationalist organisational structures and targets of advocacy, thus bridging diverse scales of action. The spatial entrepreneurs that shaped these networks were also key in developing and publicising respatialisation strategies and imaginaries that reified revolutionary nation- and region-building narratives. Such a focus on the spatial practices of anticolonial actors not only reveals new nuances about their activism and political projects, but also sheds light on the multifarious nature of African decolonisation and its spatial transformations.
