How unbiased are our citation practices? Lioba Enk, M.Sc., discusses gendered citations, unconscious influences, and presents a pilot project that offers approaches to review and reflect on citation behaviour.

Many researchers assume that they only cite papers that contribute to their own research, regardless of who wrote them. However, initial studies have shown that there appears to be a citation bias in favour of male
researchers in the neurosciences. In recent years, some scientific journals have introduced checklists that ask about "diversity, equity, inclusion" (DEI) measures, including sensitivity to gender-biased citation practices.

This raises important questions: How can one efficiently check their own citation behaviour? What unbiased standard could be used to compare it? And what unconscious factors influence citation choices?
In her talk, Lioba Enk will present a pilot project from her research area to explore these questions. The aim is to encourage the exchange of experiences and ideas across different academic disciplines.

Lioba Enk is speaker of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and doctoral researcher in the Department of Neurology at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences.

The event is part of the programme for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science and is organised by the Office for Science Policy of the City of Leipzig & Leipzig University
