Faculty of Physics and Earth System Sciences
Junior Professorship in Experimental Physics of Complex Solids (W1 with tenure track leading to W3)
Leipzig SN DEAcademic context
Central work at the Felix Bloch Institute for Solid State Physics concerns fundamental and applied questions in energy and quantum technologies, in particular questions on solid state qubits, properties of mesoscopic materials, and analysis of spin-based materials, superconducting phenomena and materials for energy generation such as photovoltaics.
This topic is part of the overarching research focus "Quantum Matter" and "Spin" at Leipzig University, which stimulates interdisciplinary collaborations and joint projects with university and non-university research institutions.
Duties
We are looking for a dedicated researcher for experimental work on quantum matter and/or solid-state energy generation materials. Methodological priorities may include magnetic resonance spectroscopy or the modification or analysis of solids using ions. Undergraduate teaching in experimental physics in bachelor's and master's programs as well as in an elective course is to be covered. This includes supervision of main and working group seminars as well as BSc, MSc and PhD theses. Associated with this are the corresponding module examinations and examinations according to the doctoral regulations. Participation in university committees is expected.
Requirements
The applicant should be distinguished by relevant scientific work in experimental basic and/or applied research in the described scientific field. Third-party funding, willingness to cooperate with experimental and theoretical colleagues, and pedagogical aptitude are expected. A very good command of written and spoken English is desirable to cover the teaching of English-language courses.
Junior professorships should be seen as opportunities for further qualification. This call is therefore aimed at applicants who, having completed a good doctoral degree (with the honour magna cum laude or higher), wish to obtain further qualification and have not completed a habilitation. If the applicant was employed as research or graduate assistant prior to or after completing his or her doctorate, then the doctorate and employment phases should have lasted no more than six years in total.
Our offer
The junior professorship is initially limited to three years. It will be extendable by a further three years subject to successful intermediate evaluation according to the Regulations on the Interim Evaluation Procedure for Junior Professors at Leipzig University (ZEvaO). No later than five years after employment commences, a tenure evaluation will be conducted under the Regulations on the Constitution, Procedure and Evaluation of Tenure Track Professorships at Leipzig University (TTO). The evaluation procedure is based on a binding, mutual evaluation agreement concluded at the start of employment, which sets out the development goals and expectations with regard to the professor’s individual performance in the categories of research, teaching, knowledge transfer as well as academic and non-university commitment. After successful tenure evaluation, appointment to a permanent W3 professorship pursuant to Section 60(2) of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG) will take place without readvertising the vacancy.
The job holder’s rights and obligations are regulated by the SächsHSG and the Saxon Service Regulations for Higher Education Institutions (HSDAVO). Applicants must meet the requirements of § 64 SächsHSG.
Leipzig University is committed to gender equality.
Severely disabled persons are encouraged to apply and will be given preference in the case of equal suitability.
Please apply by 28.06.2024 with the usual documents exclusively via Leipzig University’s recruitment portal.
