In line with Leipzig University’s quality culture, formats for the development of degree programmes must support lecturers in their teaching, bring them into dialogue with students and respect subject-specific restrictions and framework conditions. Consequently, the StQE’s format for degree programme development – as well as its advisory services and professional development programmes for lecturers – is based on the interests of the faculties and the autonomy of the lecturers and is designed to support the degree programmes to be developed.
Degree Programme Development
Degree programmes are by nature subject to continuous further development. New research methods and findings, social debates and dynamics, the (heterogeneous) educational interests of students and employers’ expectations regarding the qualifications of graduates all provide innovative ideas that can then be directly and indirectly incorporated into the further development of degree programmes.
The StQE can provide support through its established planning framework and by structuring the process in a project-based manner. In addition, the StQE works together with those responsible at the faculty to set up transparent project planning, moderates discussions between those involved in the degree programme development and, where necessary, provides content-related input and ensures alignment with the committee procedure.
The goal of degree programme development is to fundamentally revise the design of a degree programme or to develop a new degree programme based on a valid situation analysis, through reliable process planning and using a structured methodological framework. This process is aligned with Leipzig University’s committee procedure.
Integrated into the ongoing quality assurance processes at Leipzig University, the StQE actively supports and accompanies the processes of developing or fundamentally revising a degree programme by providing quality management findings (key figures and survey data), moderating a curriculum workshop or offering tailored programmes within the context of higher education teaching and learning. The procedure for this process is described here: Sample Process | Support for Degree Programme Development.
The aim of the Degree Programme in Dialog is to provide a format for exchange between lecturers and students of a degree programme so that they can go through a discourse-based process and reach a common understanding of the further development needed for their degree programme.
In a discussion moderated by the StQE with representatives of both status groups, topics and problems to be addressed are identified on the basis of available key figures and survey data on the respective degree programme. In addition, possible development options are considered and concrete steps for the further development of the degree programme are decided on. A detailed description of the format can be found here:
Teaching Development
In contrast to formats for degree programme development, those for teaching development focus on the individual method and design of teaching, the exchange within a teaching team and the further development of specific teaching and learning plans.
The StQE offers lecturers individual teaching consultations to support them in (further) developing their own teaching and learning plans. Contact us to make an appointment. We can help with any questions you may have on topics such as the following:
- What do I need to consider when working with a particular teaching and learning format (e.g. flipped classroom, research-based learning or service learning)?
- How can I support students’ self-directed and collaborative learning?
- How do I design an examination format that focuses on the skills acquired by the students?
- What continuing education programmes for teaching and learning in higher education are available?
Classroom visits are a great way to get individual feedback on your course. We offer teaching staff at Leipzig University this option as part of the services we provide. In addition, you can also set up a qualitative feedback format during the semester to find out more about what best helps the students in your course with their learning and how the students perceive innovative teaching methods that you are trying out.
Lecturers at Leipzig University can access continuing education programmes on various topics related to teaching and learning free of charge on the continuing education database (Fortbildungsdatenbank) and through the Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Saxony (Hochschuldidaktik Sachsen). Contact us if you are interested in continuing education opportunities (e.g. workshops, training courses and/or lectures) on a specific topic related to teaching and learning.
Entire degree programmes are often affected by change processes, for example, when a team of lecturers in a bachelor’s degree programme decides to focus more on research-based teaching. In this case, we can work together to develop tailored continuing education formats that will provide optimal support for your teaching staff.
