Abstract
Evamarie Hey-Hawkins was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Leipzig University from 1993 to 2023. When she retired, she left the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry and joined the Institute of Bioanalytical Chemistry (BBZ). She previously held positions at universities in England, Australia and Germany as well as various visiting professorships. She has published more than 600 publications and given over 400 lectures worldwide. Her numerous awards include e.g. the IUPAC Distinguished Woman in Chemistry Award, the Nenitescu Medal, two honorary doctorates and the Leipzig Science Prize. She is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg. In 2021 she received the Karl Ziegler Prize from the GDCh/Karl Ziegler Foundation. Her scientific interests include in particular medicinal chemistry, especially anti-tumor agents. She is currently Vice President of the German Society on Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (DGBNCT).

Prof. Hey-Hawkins holds the lectures "Chemistry of Transition Metals" (2nd semester) and "Organometallic Chemistry" (4th semester) and heads the practical course "Advanced Inorganic Chemistry" in the Bachelor Chemistry study program (5th semester). Furthermore, she offers the lecture "Chemistry of Transition Metals" in the Teacher Training study program in the 6th semester as well as the lectures "Biometallorganic Chemistry" (1st semester) and "Bioinorganic Chemistry" (2nd semester) in the Master Chemistry study program. Advanced practical courses in organometallic chemistry are offered to master students of all semesters of the master program and of all chemistry programs (MSc Chemistry, Erasmus-Mundus ASC, international MSc SCS). The focus lies on the:
- properties of the transition metals and their compounds, overview of elements and compounds of groups 3 to 12, including lanthanides/actinides;
- introduction to organometallic chemistry, environmental aspects, nomenclature, bond types, main group metal compounds, transition metal compounds;
- synthetic concepts for inorganic and organometallic compounds for use in medicinal chemistry and characterisation by modern spectroscopic methods;
- metalloenzymes, iron proteins, copper proteins, cobalamins, molybdenum enzymes, nickel enzymes, zinc enzymes.
